What is Panchakarma? Why is it necessary?

Panchkarma is a sophisticated process that includes specific Ayurveda and Siddha cathartic therapies to cleanse the body and the subconscious mind of their emotional and physical wastes. These treatments are body friendly and natural. Panchkarma, a comprehensive Ayurvedic system, is used to purify the body and clear deep-rooted toxins. It consists of man forms of therapy designed to prevent or manage the disease, restore balance and ultimately rejuvenate the entire being. Although Panchakarma is used to treat serious and chronic conditions, it is also highly effective as a preventative treatment.

The Image of Ayurveda Panchakarma has been distorted by glossy pictures of seaside resorts mushrooming all over, with oil being poured over the forehead, beautiful hands massaging a back, healthy-looking vegetarian dishes, and colorful Indian herbal spices. All of the above are to be found as posters, brochures and as Ayurvedic supplements in health shops and on the internet. Is that Panchkarma though? Is that all that this oldest living healing science means? These images present a very limited view of Panchkarma as a short detox holiday and only a few people realize just how incomplete this picture is. Panchkarma is a highly specialized and scientific form of ancient medicine. It consists of various aspects such as; healing, energy, kindness, compassion, cooking, music, beauty and colors.

There are various other Panchkarma Center; some offering a luxury holiday that provides the same treatments for everyone, you might feel relaxed but you miss the true essence of Ayurveda, which entails the basic principle of uniqueness and personalized treatments. The other Center’s are so-called authentic Ayurveda Panchkarma and the principal of treatment may be good but hygiene may be doubtful.

Ayurvedic Therapies in the true Ayurvedic way impacts and transforms the entire being; it is a complete education into a new way of life and definitely relieves one from deep-rooted toxins. Panchkarma is a comprehensive Ayurvedic system used to purify the body of toxins. It consists of many forms of therapy designed to prevent or manage the disease, restore balance and eventually rejuvenate the entire being. Although Panchkarma is used to treat serious and chronic conditions, it is also highly effective as preventative treatment. It is a time-tested fact that the process of disease starts in the aura of a human being. This process is aggravated by not following healthy lifestyle patterns, and as a result, the toxin is produced in the body. Our body by nature tries to get rid of these toxins. This defensive act of the body is considered to be a disease. Modern science tries to suppress the symptoms rather than, attend to the root cause. The determination of the correct diagnosis revealing not only the damaged system or organ but also the reason for the damage is the way to recovery.

How We Diagnose at Ayurveda Rishikesh

We choose traditional diagnostic methods as prescribed in Ayurveda to get a tridoshic assessment. Even the treatments advised after the complete analytic study is unique in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda Rishikesh we do NIDANA (diagnosis )by studying the physiological, psychic and behavioral aspect of a person.

There are mainly three methods in Ayurveda for diagnosing the Dosha imbalances and the resultant disease. They are Darsana Pariksha (observation diagnosis), Prasna Pariksha (querying diagnosis) and Sparasana Pariksha (touching diagnosis).

Darsana Pariksha

This is by observing the patient’s physical signs and symptoms, such as a color of skin, body condition, eyes, hair, behavior etc.

Prasna Pariksha

This is by raising minute questions with regard to the imbalance of each Dosha.

Sparsana Pariksha

This is by touching the patient in which pulse diagnosis, palpation, percussion, and auscultation are included. In Sparsana Pariksha Pulse diagnosis is highly important. In this diagnosis the Physician feels the radial artery pulsations on the wrist of the patient and by which he grasps correctly the milieu interior.

Two specific diagnostic procedures are employed in the above division are as follows.

Ashta Sthana Pariksha (Eight step diagnosis)

  • Nadi (Pulse diagnosis)
  • Jihwa (Examination of the tongue)
  • Malam (Examination of stool)
  • Mootram ( Examination of urine)
  • Sabdam ( Examination of voice)
  • Sparshanam ( Examination of body temperature)
  • Drik ( Examination of the eyeball)
  • Akriti (Examination of physique)

Dasavidha Pariksha (Ten step diagnosis)

  • Dooshyam (Examination of all Dhatus and Doshas)
  • Desam (Examination of all surroundings)
  • Balam (Examination of strength)
  • Kalam (Examination of the season)
  • Analam (Examination Agni)
  • Prakruti (Examination body constitution)
  • Vayas (Examination age)
  • Satwam (Examination mental power)
  • Satmyam (Examination compatibility)
